Our Focus - from your editors

We have been traveling again, this time to Mediterranean Europe and; Russia Turkey and Georgia on the Black Sea. We also trekked Egypt and Jordan via Nile felucca, donkeys, camels, 4 wheel drives, buses and trains- our lifelong ambition and well worth it.
Welcome to our many new Images Newsletter subscribers from the Holland America's Prinsendam Grand Mediterranean & Black Sea Voyage, new frends in Europe and the Middle East and from the On the Go tour group in Egypt and Jordan.. We hope you enjoy this rendition! Vist our Images Newsletter archives.

With two of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World seen in less than 3 weeks (the Pyramids and Petra) we are in awe of the creativity and marvels of the people of ancient times. For jaw-dropping scenic beauty, the red and tan tones of the vast Wadi Rum Jordanian desert at sunset while camping with the Bedouins and watching the sunrise at Egypt's Abu Simbel Temple is a lifetime must see. After visiting 3 Muslim countries we found the local people warm, friendly and very photogenic. Watch for new people and ethnic life images in our Interface Images online gallery

We are still trying to wash out the Jordanian red sand from our clothes and David wants to keep his white (now bright red!) desert hiking socks as a momento (not!). David has already posted a few images from this latest of David and Anna`s Excellent Travel and Photo Adventures online and are included at the top of this Images Newsletter. More images and videos to come as we process them. Our popular Where are Dave and Anna? (tm) contest details are below. Have fun guessing this one!

Answer to Last Quiz - Where are Dave & Anna?

Our last contest was not answered correctly. Several guessed Easter Island or the Galapagos incorrectly. The photo of us was taken on Isla Robinson Crusoe (formerly Juan Fernández Islands ) off the Chilean coast of South America. It was recently renamed after the book character by the Chileans to promote tourism there.

A week after our visit, a tsunami created by the Feb. 27/10 Chilean earthquake swept the buildings and homes of the entire main town of about 500 people and all coastal infrastructure into the Pacific Ocean. Fortunately, a grandfather’s warning telephone call from the Chilean mainland to his grand daughter on the island in the early morning hours prompted her to ring a warning bell so only 16 lives were lost.

Please help the townspeople recover, make a donation to the Chile Disaster Relief - Auxilio para Chile See photos of the town before the tsunami; and photos after the tsunami. Thank you

New and Enthusiast Photographer Tips

Dave’s Smile Circle Group

As a Vancouver BC based wedding photographer, I created a fun and creative photo technique to capture the bridal party. It became my signature wedding image for all my weddings. I would lie on the dance floor with my camera pointed up, flash on and make sure all of the bridal party were positioned above me looking down and smiling while touching heads. Here are a few examples from our Vancouver, BC Wedding Photography Web Site:

Well I modified this technique to be used in our travel photography adventures so both the photographer and the subjects can be in the shot. This works with BOTH Point and Shoot and SLR cameras and works indoors or outdoors. You can capture up to 10 people with this technique (depends on the camera lens). Here’s how it’s done.

David & Anna Smith (top right) with Amazon girls in Sinop, northern Turkey demostrating Dave's "smile circle group" (tm) camera technique

  1. Set the camera timer to about a 10 second duration. Look for the clock/timer symbol.

  2. Force the flash on to lighten up the faces with strong backlighting from the sky or overhead lights. Look for the lightning bolt symbol or pull up the popup flash (or use an external dedicated strobe flash set at TTL/ATL).
  3. Set the cameras focus method to multiple point or face detection. If left on the default center spot focus setting the camera will not focus on the faces but on the sky or background
  4. Set the lens to the maximum wide angle possible to fit all people in the shot
  5. Place the camera on the floor/ground pointing up.
  6. Ask your subjects to gather round the camera facing down so their heads form a ring of faces over the camera. Ask them to touch heads. This always invokes laughter and merriment.
  7. Press the shutter button, and if you want to be in the photo yourself, join the ring and encourage the group to smile, laugh, making funny faces, etc.

Notes: By placing the camera on the floor/ground you have an opportunity to get more people in the shot as it us further away from the subjects versus holding the camera while you lie down. 10 seconds later you will have created a memorable photograph. Take several shots to select a best one

  • Send me your shots by email using this technique. The best ones will be featured in our next newsletter and awarded a copy of our tutorial photography CD.
